Levels of Care for Alcohol Addiction

1. Ambulatory Detox (5–10 days)

Ambulatory detox typically lasts 5–10 days. Your medical provider decides the right length for you. We provide outpatient (ambulatory) detox for alcohol, opioids (including heroin) and benzodiazepines when it's medically safe outside a hospital. Your medical provider decides, using standard withdrawal assessment scales. We do not provide inpatient detox. Detox is provided by our medical team, including a nurse practitioner under physician supervision, with daily monitoring and therapy and group services based on your treatment plan. If you have severe withdrawal symptoms, such as seizures, hallucinations or confusion, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

May benefit: Moderate alcohol dependence with stable home environment

2. Partial Hospitalization Program / PHP (2-4 weeks)

Structured morning programming Monday through Saturday, 6 days per week, with group therapy, individual counseling, psychiatric support, and medical monitoring.

May benefit: Stepping down from detox, co-occurring disorders, or high relapse risk

3. Intensive Outpatient Program / IOP (6-12 weeks)

Flexible treatment (3-4 hours/day, 3-5 days/week) that allows you to maintain work and family responsibilities while receiving comprehensive care.

May benefit: Working adults, those with supportive home environments, stepping down from PHP

4. Day Treatment

Adult mental health day treatment, 3 days a week.

5. Outpatient

Aftercare and outpatient groups.

Recovery Housing Support (6-12+ months)

ORH-certified sober living with peer support, structure, and accountability while continuing outpatient treatment.

May benefit: Those needing a substance-free living environment during early recovery

Alcohol Addiction in Northwest Ohio

Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in Ohio and across the United States. Unlike illegal drugs, alcohol is socially accepted and widely available, making it easy for casual drinking to gradually become dependence. Many people do not realize they have a problem until relationships, work, or health begin to suffer.

In Lucas County and the greater Toledo area, alcohol-related emergency room visits and deaths remain consistently high. The combination of economic stress, social isolation, and easy access creates an environment where alcohol use disorder thrives — but recovery is absolutely possible with the right support.

Vital Health is deeply committed to serving the Toledo and Maumee communities. We understand the unique challenges faced by individuals struggling with alcohol addiction in our region. Our programs are designed to provide a safe, supportive, and confidential environment where healing can begin.

We offer a personalized approach to treatment, recognizing that each individual's journey to recovery is unique. Our team of experienced professionals works collaboratively with clients to develop comprehensive treatment plans that address their specific needs, goals, and circumstances.
