Understanding Our Services

Our youth behavioral health services are approved by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) and covered by Ohio Medicaid. Here's what each service means for your child.

What is CPST?

Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment

CPST is a hands-on support service where a trained behavioral health specialist works directly with your child in their everyday environment — at home, at school, or in the community. Think of it as a personal guide who helps your child practice coping skills, manage emotions, and build healthy relationships in real-life situations.

What CPST Looks Like:

  • One-on-one support in your child's home, school, or community
  • Help with managing emotions, anger, anxiety, and social skills
  • Connecting your family to resources (school support, community programs)
  • Working with parents and teachers as a team
  • Flexible scheduling — fits around school and family life

What is TBS?

Therapeutic Behavioral Services

TBS provides intensive, one-on-one behavioral support for children and teens who need extra help managing difficult behaviors. A certified TBS specialist works alongside your child to teach them new ways to handle frustration, follow routines, and succeed at home and school.

What TBS Looks Like:

  • Intensive 1-on-1 behavioral coaching in the home or community
  • Teaching replacement behaviors for aggression, defiance, or outbursts
  • Helping your child follow daily routines and build self-regulation
  • Preventing the need for more restrictive placements (residential, hospitalization)
  • Parent coaching — teaching you strategies that work at home

What is Day Treatment?

Structured Therapeutic Programming (After School & Summer)

Day Treatment is a structured, group-based therapeutic program that provides more intensive support than weekly therapy alone. Your child attends a set schedule (after school or full-day in summer) with a team of therapists and behavioral specialists who work together on skill-building, emotional regulation, and social development.

What Day Treatment Looks Like:

  • 3-4 hours of structured programming after school (or full day in summer)
  • Group therapy + individual interventions in a safe, supervised environment
  • Social skills training, anger management, and emotional regulation
  • Peer interaction in a therapeutic setting — learning to work with others
  • Ideal for children who need more support than weekly therapy but don't need residential care

What is Individual Counseling?

Licensed Clinical Therapy (School, Office, or Community)

Individual counseling is one-on-one therapy with a licensed clinician (LSW, LISW, LPC, or LPCC). Your child meets with the same therapist weekly to work through anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral challenges, or family issues in a safe, confidential space. We offer sessions at school, in our Maumee office, or in the community.

What Counseling Looks Like:

  • Weekly 45-60 minute sessions with a licensed therapist
  • Evidence-based approaches: CBT, play therapy, trauma-focused therapy, DBT skills
  • Personalized treatment plan built with your family's input
  • Regular progress updates and parent/caregiver involvement
  • Flexible location: at your child's school, our office, or in the community

What is Mental Health IOP?

Intensive Outpatient Program for Youth Mental Health

Mental Health IOP is a step up from weekly therapy for children and teens ages 5–17 who need more intensive support but do not require hospitalization or residential treatment. Vital Health offers a 5-day track and a 3-day track, with 9–12 clinical hours per week, while participants continue to live at home and attend school.

What Mental Health IOP Looks Like:

  • 3 hours per session, 3 days per week (typically after school)
  • Group therapy with peers facing similar challenges (anxiety, depression, self-harm, trauma)
  • Individual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician
  • DBT skills, CBT, and evidence-based coping strategies
  • Family involvement and parent education sessions
  • Step-down support as your teen progresses to weekly therapy

How to Talk to Your Child About Starting Services

Starting therapy or behavioral health services can feel scary for kids. Here are some tips from our clinical team to help you have that conversation.

1

Keep It Simple & Honest

Use age-appropriate language. For younger children: "You're going to meet someone who helps kids with big feelings." For teens: "This is someone you can talk to who won't judge you — they're trained to help."

2

Normalize It

"Lots of kids talk to someone when things feel hard. It's like having a coach for your feelings." Avoid framing it as punishment or something being "wrong" with them.

3

Let Them Ask Questions

Give space for their concerns. Common questions: "Will I miss school?" "Will my friends know?" "What will we do there?" Answer honestly — if you don't know, say "We'll find out together."

4

Reassure Them

"This person is on your team. What you talk about stays between you and them." Emphasize that they're not in trouble and that getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

5

You Don't Have to Have All the Answers

It's okay to say: "I don't know exactly what it will be like, but I know these people care about kids and they're really good at helping." Our team will guide both you and your child through the first visit. You're not alone in this.
