Youth Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Toledo, OH

Our Youth Intensive Outpatient (IOP) provides short-term, structured support for teens experiencing substance use challenges—alongside emotional or behavioral concerns. Led by licensed mental health professionals, our program combines evidence-based therapies, skill-building sessions, and peer support to help participants navigate challenges, manage stress, and develop coping strategies for everyday life.

Our program serves youth ages 13–18, offering care in a supportive group environment.

Youth IOP is a structured, evidence-based level of care that provides more support than weekly outpatient therapy, while still allowing teens to live at home, attend school, and stay connected to their families.

Through small-group sessions, individual counseling, and family involvement, participants learn:

  • Coping skills and emotional regulation strategies

  • Education on substance use, recovery, and relapse prevention

  • Healthy decision-making and communication skills

  • Confidence-building and peer support in a safe environment

Youth IOP bridges the gap between outpatient therapy and inpatient care, ensuring teens receive the right level of support at the right time.

Youth IOP is designed for children and teens who need more support than weekly therapy can provide, but who do not require 24-hour inpatient care. Signs your child may benefit include:

  • Using substances (alcohol, cannabis, etc.) in ways that are affecting their health, relationships, or daily life
  • Struggling with co-occurring challenges like anxiety, depression, or trauma
  • Transitioning out of inpatient or residential care and need continued support
  • At risk of school disruption, family conflict, or legal consequences related to substance use

An assessment with our team will help determine whether IOP is the right level of care for your child.

  • Evidence-based therapies that address both substance use concerns and co-occurring emotional or behavioral health challenges

  • Skill-building in coping strategies, communication, emotional regulation, and decision-making

  • Substance use prevention and relapse prevention education to encourage healthy, sustainable choices

  • Family involvement and guidance to support progress at home

  • Access to additional services at Vital Health, including seamless connection to other levels of care if needed

Our Youth Intensive Outpatient Program for substance use provides a structured, supportive environment designed to help teens build lasting recovery skills while involving the whole family in the process.

  • Three treatment days per week with structured group and individual therapy

  • Development of coping skills and emotional regulation strategies

  • Education on substance use, triggers, and relapse prevention

  • Active family involvement and support to reinforce progress at home

Our Youth IOP is built on proven, research-backed therapies that help children and teens make meaningful progress. Treatment may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention planning.

These approaches are tailored to each child’s needs, ensuring care that is both effective and compassionate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Inpatient programs provide 24/7 care in a hospital or residential setting, while standard outpatient therapy typically involves one session per week. Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) bridge the gap between the two. At Vital Health, Youth IOP offers structured, evidence-based treatment three days per week.

This allows children and teens to receive focused therapeutic support while still living at home, going to school, and staying connected to their families.

We know that recovery and healing don’t happen in isolation—families play a vital role in a child’s progress. That’s why our Youth IOP includes family therapy, education, and ongoing communication. Parents and caregivers are guided in building skills to support their child at home, strengthen family relationships, and reinforce the strategies learned in treatment.

A Diagnostic Assessment is an initial evaluation conducted by a licensed professional to assess your child’s mental and behavioral health needs. This assessment helps us determine the best support and services for your child. It is required for participation to ensure we provide appropriate care.

Each Youth IOP session follows a structured format led by licensed mental health and addiction professionals.

Sessions often begin with a check-in and goal-setting, followed by group therapy focused on coping skills, emotional regulation, and relapse prevention strategies. Youth also participate in skill-building activities designed to improve communication, decision-making, and healthy peer relationships.

Family sessions are scheduled regularly to ensure caregivers are actively involved. This balance of structure, support, and real-life skill practice helps youth apply what they learn in treatment to their daily lives.

We ask for your insurance information because our Kids after school program is a day treatment program designed to provide structured, therapeutic support for children and youth. Just like visiting a healthcare provider, behavioral health services are considered part of overall health services.

Since our program offers evidence-based care led by licensed professionals, we bill insurance to ensure children receive the support they need. Most insurance plans cover Day Treatment services when medically necessary.

You will need to provide:

  • Insurance information

  • Guardianship paperwork (if you are the child’s legal guardian)

  • Any relevant medical documents

  • Medications (if your child is taking medication for behavioral health concerns)
